Project Engineer Bootcamp Fundamentals

April 2, 2025 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM (HST)

Description

GCA is proud to be partnerering with AGC of Colorado and the Construction Mastery Institute to provide Project Engineer Bootcamp, Units 1, 2 and 3!

Project Engineers (PEs) play a pivotal role in the success of construction projects, with many being recent graduates or interns. This Bootcamp bridges the gap left by higher education and targets interns or Project Engineers in the early stages of their construction careers, including those with up to seven years of experience. It is also advantageous for craft leaders or administrative personnel aspiring to become Project Engineers. The Bootcamp is conducted by seasoned constructors and instructors eager to impart their work experiences and nurture the next generation of construction leaders.

After finishing Unit 2, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of contracts and subcontracts, and their impact on the role of a Project Engineer (PE) in daily operations.  They will also learn about scheduling concepts and the best practices for updating the Contract Schedule.  The unit integrates knowledge of how submittals and the Critical Path Method (CPM) schedule facilitate material and equipment procurement.  Additionally, students will explore the PE's responsibilities concerning jobsite safety and master 360-degree communication techniques to effectively interact with owners, architects, engineers, peers, craftworkers, and trade partners.

Unit 2: Superstructure - Specifics

Mondays and Wednesdays, April 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 2:00 – 4:30 PM MT | 11:00AM - 1:30PM HST

Session 1: Introduction & Submittal Management
This session will focus on review of the Contract documents as it relates to the submittal process. Students will also learn what each action on the submittal stamp means, and the consequences if a subcontractor installs materials that are "approved" but do not match the Contract documents.

Session 2: Scheduling Concepts and How to Status a CMP Schedule
This session will focus on reading and understanding scheduling activities including durations, predecessor / successor logic, and float. In addition skills on how to status a schedule with actual start, finish dates and remaining durations will be taught.

Session 3: Material and Equipment Procurement
This session ties the submittal management process with the CPM schedule so materials and equipment can be expedited and procured in accordance with the contract schedule.  Bonus content includes understanding and developing an anticipated log and an "Escape Room" exercise used to confirm student understanding of the topic.

Session 4: Safety for Project Engineers
This session focuses on learning and understanding the components of a successful safety culture including a succinct site specific safety plan, job hazard analysis, OSHA required site specific worker orientation, and pre-task planning.

Session 5: Communication
This session focuses on how to successfully communicate including communicating up (supervisor, owner, architect), around (peers and associates), and down (subcontractor and subordinates). This session includes verbal, nonverbal skills and industry best practices.
