Project Engineer Bootcamp Three Unit Series

Project Engineer Bootcamp Three Unit Series

Monday, March 25, 2024 (11:00 AM - 1:30 PM) (HST)

Description

GCA is proud to be partnerering with AGC of Colorado and the Construction Mastery Institute to provide Project Engineer Bootcamp, Units 1, 2 and 3!

Project Engineers (PE) are critical to the success of the project. You've heard the statement that "information is power", well the PE typically controls and has the most information about the entire project, putting them in a powerful position.

This Bootcamp picks up where higher education leaves off and is intended for Interns or Project Engineers who are early in their construction careers, including graduates with up to 7 years of experience. The Bootcamp also benefits Craft Leaders or Administrative Staff looking to transition into Project Engineer role.

Upon completion of Unit 2 students will have a clear understanding of contracts and subcontracts and how they influence the roll of a PE on a daily basis in addition to learning scheduling concepts and best practices for updating the Contract Schedule. This Unit brings together how submittals, and the CPM schedule are used for material and equipment procurement activities. Students will also
learn about the PE's role with regard to jobsite safety and learn 360-degree communication techniques to help them advocate for themselves and communicate with owners, architects, engineers, peers, craftworkers, and trade partners.

Unit 2: Superstructure

Mondays and Wednesdays, March 25, 27, April 1, 3, 8, 2:00 – 4:30 PM MT

Session 1: Introduction & Submittal Management
This session will focus on review of the Contract documents as it relates to the submittal process. Students will also learn what each action on the submittal stamp means, and the consequences if a subcontractor installs materials that are "approved" but do not match the Contract documents.

Session 2: Scheduling Concepts and How to Status a CMP Schedule
This session will focus on reading and understanding scheduling activities including durations, predecessor / successor logic, and float. In addition skills on how to status a schedule with actual start, finish dates and remaining durations will be taught.

Session 3: Material and Equipment Procurement
This session ties the submittal management process with the CPM schedule so materials and equipment can be expedited and procured in accordance with the contract schedule.  Bonus content includes understanding and developing an anticipated log and an "Escape Room" exercise used to confirm student understanding of the topic.

Session 4: Safety for Project Engineers
This session focuses on learning and understanding the components of a successful safety culture including a succinct site specific safety plan, job hazard analysis, OSHA required site specific worker orientation, and pre-task planning.

Session 5: Communication
This session focuses on how to successfully communicate including communicating up (supervisor, owner, architect), around (peers and associates), and down (subcontractor and subordinates). This session includes verbal, nonverbal skills and industry best practices.
